Remember the bra and panties matches? When women were seen as valets, sexual objects and nothing more than something to wank over. Some women clawed their way onto the screen to show that they could be much more than eye candy. Women like Chyna, for example, could kick your arse and you’d be in awe that she could do that. Ivory is another example of a woman who wanted you to notice her for her in-ring talent. WWE at first refused to see what the women could do, I mean sure they wrestled but the seriousness was never fully there.
But, this is more than just WWE. Impact had a solid women’s division, promotions like Pro Wrestling Eve, RiSE and Wonder Ring Stardom are just all women, back in the ’90s nobody thought that that would be possible. Women will rip each other to shreds for glory, they will square up to men to prove that they are as good or better than the men. People take note of women’s wrestling now more than they ever have before, the quality of women’s wrestling has surged so high. Recently, Tessa Blanchard even had the longest match against Mercedes Martinez at 75 minutes long, something that would never have been heard of back in the ’90s.
The shift in women’s wrestling actually becoming something has been a deeply enjoyable experience, the dark times of how it used to be is nothing more than a WWE Network wet dream. Women are the main event, they’re an inspiration to many, they are producing some of the best wrestling matches today and are no longer just there for sexual exploitation. Women’s wrestling is only going to get better and better as time goes by. So many women are being inspired to wrestle, and even more, legends are going to be made. It may have taken a long time, but wrestling is no longer a man’s world.
