A decent promo can stir emotions if executed correctly. The rightly words can cause passion, sadness, make the crowd boo or cheer, there’s even some wrestlers that have you eating out of the palms of their hands.
Dusty Rhodes “Hard Times” promo is still as iconic as when he first uttered the words. The passion he put into every word can still be felt. Promos define a moment, take CM Punk’s infamous Pipebomb. When he sat on that stage, microphone in hand, nobody knew he would spout words that would etch themselves deeply in peoples minds. He spoke of unfairness, he was angry, he was captivating and to many it is considered their favourite promo.
Men like Paul Heyman, Enzo Amore and Kenny Omega can enchant you with their words in their sleep. Enzo dubbed himself the “Smacktalker Skywalker” because when he talks you can’t help but listen. Even if you feel like he’s going on, you still pay attention. Kenny does fantastic heel promos that bring out a cocky but much loved character. When he slips into Japanese, you can’t believe that he will tear into somebody in another language. Paul may be the God of promos. Not only does he speak for Brock Lesnar, but word is he helps other Superstars with their promos and it is highly plausible.
I could name a number of fantastic promos, the times they have made moments. Instead, I’m going to share a few of my favourite’s:
Kenny Omega after winning the IWGP United States Championship, speech and interview.
Bullet Club Promo – Honor Rising Night 2
Tama Tonga G1 Press Promo
Dusty Rhodes – Hard Times
Enzo Amore after Big Cass attacked him
Stone Cold after winning King of the Ring
Paul Heyman and Brock Lesnar after Brock conquered The Undertakers streak
And of course – CM Punk’s Pipebomb:
